Discover a fascinating region

From the valley of the Dordogne river to the Lot et Garonne department, you will discover the wealth of a region with an incredible heritage. The Middle Ages left their mark on the landscape with medieval towns, characteristic villages, half-timbered houses and fortified castles. You will love the South West way of life with its delicious gastronomy. A region where you can enjoy the good life… quite an agenda!

The medieval towns

Bastides are fortified towns built along the same architectural lines. A central square in the heart of the village surrounded by covered galleries and arcades, a slightly off-centre church and a whole series of little parallel and perpendicular laneways forming a criss-cross pattern. There are no fewer than five of these medieval towns in the area around the campsite: Monflanquin, Cancon, Castillonnes, Villeréal, and Monpazier, all within a radius of less than 20 km.

The Médiévales

Come and celebrate Les Médiévales in Monflanquin on 15 and 16 August. Dress up in period costumes and experience the Middle Ages for a few days. The streets are alive with troubadours dancing and singing and costumed artists strolling by. You can attend workshops on stone-cutting or calligraphy, and don't miss the spectacular tournaments with knights on horseback. It's just like the real thing!

Castles

There are so many in Lot et Garonne and Dordogne that it would be difficult to visit them all. Among the best known, Bonaguil, Duras and Gavaudun Castle, where you can abseil down from the tower. Our favourite is Milandes Castle, where Josephine Baker and her children lived for several years. You will be enchanted by a spectacular show in the gardens with birds of prey.

The exceptional gardens

With something special for botany lovers, the Marqueyssac Gardens are certainly one of the most visited gardens in Périgord. Admission is free. The 6 km tour of the 20 hectare garden invites you to discover no fewer than 150,000 century-old boxwood topiaries.

The Latour-Marliac garden is also worth a visit. It is one of the largest water lily gardens in the world, with no fewer than 250 species. Who would have thought there were so many?

The Lascaux Cave

The cave was discovered by 4 adolescents in 1940. Situated in black Périgord, 80 km from the campsite, it represents one of the most important and splendid caves adorned with frescoes and drawings dating from the Palaeolithic era, more than 17,000 years old! Equally amazing, the Padirac Chasm leads you down 103 metres into the bowels of the earth where little boats enable you to discover the "Rain Lake".

The local markets

There is no better way to discover the flavours of Lot et Garonne and Dordogne than by taking a stroll through our markets. There is something for everyone: local producers' markets, traditional markets, farmers' markets, gourmet markets, organic markets. You can thus discover Marmande tomatoes, Agen plums, Cancon hazelnuts, Périgord walnuts and our delicious kiwis. And did you know that the first organic market in France was created at Villeneuve sur Lot in 1975?

The vineyards

The Lot et Garonne vineyards are among the oldest in France. By blending characteristic grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec, they provide a great variety of products. Set out to discover the Côtes de Marmande, Côtes de Duras and Buzet wines of character, and don't forget the more liqueur-like wine, the famous Monbazillac.
